#ANZAncestryTime & Historical War Books

November 11, 2020

Each Tuesday night at 7.30pm AEST, it’s time for Australia & New Zealand Ancestry Time, which is a Twitter Platform, for discussion, focusing on a different genealogy/family history topic each week. The topics are related to Australian and New Zealand family history research. #ANZAncestryTime was created by Sharn White, Fran Kitto and Pauleen Cass . I was very honoured to be asked to be a moderator along with Jill Ball and Shauna Hicks. Representing New Zealand are Seonaid Lewis and Margaret Gaffney

Anyone with an interest in genealogy and family history is welcome to participate in the discussion using the hashtag #ANZAncestryTime

Our Military Ancestors

The topic for this week was Our Military ancestors. The discussion was very lively with many of ideas contributed, relating to websites and other resources available to find more information about our war family history.

The discussion turned to historical novels set in war time. This is my favourite historical fiction genre, so I thought I would list some of my favourites here. The storyline, that I enjoy the most is the French Resistance, and its undercover work, during WW2. The WW2 novels which are based on fact and good research, are my favourites.

I can recall in the 1980s, that there were many books released, that covered The French Resistance. I couldn’t get enough of them, but I really cannot remember most of the titles. The books listed below are recent releases, due to that memory lapse. These are books that I’ve read at least once, and enjoyed enough to read again.

Historical War Fiction Novels

Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff

The Paris Seamstress by Natasha Lester

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

All That I Am by Anna Funder

The Love That I Have by James Moloney

Nightingale by Fiona McIntosh

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

A Train in Winter: An Extraordinary Story of Women, Friendship & Resistance in Occupied France by Caroline Moorehead

Outwitting The Gestapo by Lucie Aubrac

Resistance Women by Jennifer Chiaverini

Goodnight Sweetheart by Pam Weaver

The Fortunate Ones: Beautiful and Heartbreaking WW2 Historical Fiction by Catherine Hokin

I am currently reading The Collaborator by Diane Armstrong

Non-Fiction War History

Following are non fiction books about war history that I have read and enjoyed. Each of these books I would happily read again, if only there was the time.

Fromelles and Pozierres: In the Trenches of Hell by Peter FitzSimons

Sandakan: A Conspiracy of Silence by Lynette Ramsey Silver

Nancy Wake by Russell Braddon

Resistance: A French Woman’s Journal of the War by Agnes Humbert

Have you read any historical novels recently, that you’d recommend. I’d love to hear, and promise to reply to all comments.

  1. Jen, even the covers look interesting. Thanks for also sharing about #ANZAncestryTime. Fran

  2. Wow, what a list. Some I’ve enjoyed and more to explore.

    • Let me know if you read any of them Jill. Sorry my reply is late. For some reason, that I don’t know, it went to spam.
