April A-Z Challenge – J is for Jones

April 12, 2015

JJ is for JONES JOSEPH HENRY born in 1839 in Green Ponds, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Joseph is my GG Grandfather.

Joseph’s father THOMAS JONES was born in 1808 in London, England. He arrived in Australia in about 1820, as part of the army, probably to oversee the convicts in Tasmania. But I haven’t done any research on this as yet.

In 1855 Joseph married ELLEN VIRGINIA LOWE at St. David’s Church, Hobart. They had 5 children, before Ellen died in 1872, when the youngest child, Avonia was aged 6 months.

Joseph had a troublesome life, which I’m sure was made more difficult trying to care for his family of young children. His son Thomas died in a mining accident. Eventually Joseph died a tragic death. He went missing and was found dead some days later. Click here to read the obituary for Joseph Henry Jones, known as Joe The Quacker.
